11/1/2011 Bukit Brown Cemetery Walkabout IIJoin us for our second tour at Singapore's last remaining traditional Chinese cemetery! This cemetery houses the graves of many famous fathers of Singapore like Chew Boon Lay, Chew Joo Chiat, and the grandfather of Lee Kuan Yew, but it is also the resting place of many ordinary people - all of whom have helped built Singapore in many ways. Today, there is an estimated 120,000 graves left. The graves not only reveal the histories of individuals, families and of Singapore itself, but it is also a living heritage of Singapore.
However, this will be affected by recent development plans to construct a road linking to the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE). By organising this walkabout, we thus hope to highlight the importance of Bukit Brown as well as to consider how these constructions/destructions will affect our history and identity in an age where development and overpopulation is now affecting our present and past. Details are as follows: **********Date/Day*********** 12th November 2011 (Sat) *****Meeting Places & Time******* 9.00am: Harbourfront Bus Terminal (for those coming from NUS) 10.00am: Bus Stop opp. Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), Lornie Road For further information or to confirm your attendance, please visit our Facebook Events Page, or email us at [email protected].
