1/18/2012 Southeast Asia Tidbits #1Hello everyone! Southeast Asian Studies Society (SEASS) is launching a new series of blog posts called Southeast Asia's Tidbits on anything that is related and to do with Southeast Asia. It can be a photo with a short caption or a feature article on something you want to talk about. Nothing formal, as long as you have something that you want to share with other people who are interested in Southeast Asia just like you! Today, we would like to address the issue of tourism. In the video embedded below, Charlie Chaplin and his brother, Sidney Chaplin, visited Java with places such as Bali, Bandung and Surabaya. There, they saw many bare-breasted women, dances they have never seen before, spices which they have yet to taste and the mostly untouched and hidden treasures of culture we will hardly see today. Do you think that tourism or the implicit foreign influence through tourism will destroy the culture of such people, say their customs and traditions? We await for your tidbits on this topic! |
